All too often, when North Americans and Europeans travel to island nations, they're confronted with two options - all inclusive buffets consisting of the same food they can get at home, or potentially questionable local fare that takes some getting used to.

For example, rookie travelers to Dominica might be enticed by the local dish of 'mountain chicken', only to find that the dish is actually not chicken at all, but a large land frog that is a favorite of the Dominican people. But while the Caribi dish of smoked opossum (known as Manicou) might not be your style, there are a multitude of locally grown fruits, vegetables, seafood, and flavors that make Dominica's cuisine something that won't soon be forgotten.

At Domcan's Cafe, we understand that there's a time to experiment with exotic cuisine, and a time to be content with a burger. Whichever is your prference, we'll look after you.

Dominica is an island of many influences, and the local food options reflect that. For example, the food of the West Indies creole inspires many local kitchens to use a sauce made from curry and Scotch bonnet peppers, which gives common foods a little spicy kick. The influence of English colonials sees cucumber as being part of many menu items locally, while Asian, French and African influences are also apparent, due to travelers and foods that have found their way to Dominica from those places.

But it's the locally grown and caught foods that really make Dominican cuisine special - crabs, lobster, flying fish, clams, king fish, and snapper give local seafood a reputation for the ultimate in freshness, while exotic fruits and vegetables such as Yucca (which is similar to an American squash or British marrow), breadfruit, dasheen (a form of sweet potato), bananas, and avocados picked right off the tree brings you flavors you'll find nowhere else.

At the end of the day, while we stock a full selection of beers and spirits, you might also find yourself partaking in a plate of Johnny Cakes, and a swig or two of locally brewed coconut rum punch.

But hey, if your stomach aches for a little taste of home, let Grace cook you up a good old-fashioned burger, and watch the sun go down over our amazing oceanside horizon view.

Don't delay. BOOK NOW.
