Back in 1995, Dutch-Canadian Harry Vanden Dungen went traveling in search of a place to retire. Florida was just too 'big city', Arizona too hot, and the Caribbean Islands of the Dominican Republic just felt too touristy.
So he kept moving, and eventually found himself in a place you don't often see on holiday travel brochures - the island of Dominica.
Thinking that this exotic and warm locale might be a good place for him to spread his “snowbird” wings, Harry stuck around, and by the following winter, he knew that Dominica would be his home forever more.
The reason? Well, other than the natural beauty of the “nature island”, the warmth of the people, and the noticeable health improvements the climate brought him… There was Grace.
Harry met Grace on one of his jaunts through the picturesque town of Calibishie, a small fishing village at the north-east side of the island. Grace ran one of the many little rum shacks in the heart of the village, and also managed the highly active pool hall next door, and before too long, Harry was drawn to her rum shack on a daily basis. Slowly but surely, she gave in to his Dutch-Canadian charm, and decided to go out with him.
The rest, as they say, is history.
From the moment that Harry first decided to make Dominica his home, he began work on securing a future for his new love, and together they began building their dream café as an attachment to the home that Grace’s family had owned for more than a hundred years. Before long, Domcan's Cafe had built up a solid reputation for having the best food, and most outstanding service, in the region.
But Harry isn't one to let the dust settle, so before too long, he had a second property under construction - a guesthouse/restaurant in a part of the island that he'd found to be more beautiful and hospitable than any other; Castle Bruce.
Today, Harry and Grace work to make Domcan's Retreat as enjoyable as possible for travelers around the world - from Germany to America, Australia to Hong Kong, and everywhere in between.
While large tourist resorts strive to give you a homogenized version of island life, and a corporate face that rarely breaks a smile, when you travel to Dominica and stay at Domcan's Retreat, you'll find the personal touch goes a long way, as you're served drinks by Harry, or being fed by Grace, and their team strives to make your vacation one that brings a smile to your face for years after.
